Pay and progression
We’re proud to be accredited by the Living Wage Foundation and pay the Real Living Wage to all our staff and contractors.
Our roles are grouped into grades based on responsibility, with each grade made up of pay bands. Most new employees join us at the starting band for their role, with opportunities to progress within that grade over time based on performance and achieving agreed objectives.
Every appointment is subject to a six-month probation period, unless you are transferring from another local government service. If you join us on a fixed-term contract, the probation period is proportionate to the contract length.
Pension
The Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) is an important part of our rewards package. It offers a secure, well-established public-sector pension.
You’ll contribute between 5.5% and 12.5% of your salary, depending on your earnings, and we top it up with an employer contribution which is currently over 17%. You can choose to contribute more if you wish.
Working arrangements and location
We support flexible ways of working and encourage our employees to work in ways that suit both their role and their life outside of work.
Depending on your role, we offer the opportunity to work from home or from different office locations. We provide modern, flexible office space near the city centre.
Time off and leave
You will receive 25 days of annual leave per year, plus bank holidays. After five years of continuous service, including any time working at another local authority, this increases to 30 days of annual leave.
If you work part time, we calculate your leave and bank holiday on a pro rata basis.
You can also buy up to five extra days of annual leave each year (pro rata).
Our flexible public holiday scheme allows you to work on a bank holiday and take another day off instead. This gives you more choice to choose a day that better suits your values, beliefs, caring responsibilities or simply personal needs.
Health and wellbeing

Our wellbeing hub provides access to resources and support to help with both physical and mental wellbeing.
You’ll have free access to our swimming pools and fitness sessions.
We also offer a free, confidential employee assistance programme, with expert advice, self-help resources, and support available by phone or online whenever you need it.
Learning, development and recognition
Your development starts from day one. Alongside your induction and essential training, you’ll have access to a wide range of learning opportunities throughout your career with us.
You’ll have regular conversations with your line manager to talk about your goals, interests and development needs. Together, you’ll agree what support or training will help you succeed. We encourage open conversations about your career progression and future ambitions.
Development opportunities include workshops, courses, coaching, mentoring and leadership programmes, delivered both in-house and by other providers.
We recognise and celebrate great work through our reward and recognition scheme, including an annual awards event.
Travel
We promote sustainable modes of transport for travelling to, from and for work.
This includes discounted rail travel and subsidised public transport, and the option to claim mileage when cycling for work.
