Fire safety in council homes

We check all our properties regularly to make sure they meet fire-safety standards. The walls, floors and certain doors are designed to withstand fire and slow the spread of smoke.

We need your help to maintain fire safety in your home, whether you are a tenant or leaseholder.

Fit at least one smoke alarm on each level in your home and test them often. Read Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service’s home safety advice to find out what to do in the event of a fire.

Plan ahead and create an action plan for how you and everyone in your home would escape from a fire. Make sure everybody knows how to leave the building and where to find door and window keys.

If you live in a flat, read our guide to fire safety and prevention in flats [PDF, 0.6MB].

Minimise the risk of fire

  • Take extra care when cooking and avoid the use of deep fat fryers.
  • Buy appliances from trustworthy sources. Register your appliances and switch them off at night and when you are out.
  • Be careful when using portable heaters. Avoid using gas, paraffin, or electric-bar heaters.
  • Do not overload sockets with adapters for many plugs. Use a single plug in each socket if possible.
  • Do not smoke indoors, and dispose of cigarette butts properly.
  • Make sure candles are in a fireproof holder and don’t light them near children, pets, or fabric. Extinguish them when you leave the room and at night.
  • Put all rubbish in the correct bin. If you live in a flat, keep the bin-room door closed.
  • If you have a gas boiler, allow us to access your home so we can service it every year.
