Council awards £12,000 to fuel a summer of free fun

Cambridge City Council has awarded a total of £12,000 in grants to help fund free sport and exercise activities for children and families in Cambridge during the summer holidays.

There will be activities taking place all summer, starting on Thursday 24 July, helping to fuel a summer of fun.

The funding was awarded through the council’s Summer Activities Grant scheme which supports local providers to run activities at no additional cost to residents.

This is an exciting opportunity for children and families to try new things. From martial arts to clip ‘n climb, these sessions offer something for everyone.

Full details of each event can be found on the summer events calendar.

In addition to these activities, the council will also be hosting free activities every Tuesday from 10am to 2pm on some of the city’s open spaces:

  • Tuesday 29 July – Coldham’s Common
  • Tuesday 5 August – Trumpington recreation ground
  • Tuesday 12 August – St Albans Road recreation ground
  • Tuesday 19 August – Coleridge recreation ground

Full details can also be found on the summer events calendar.

To help parents plan their summer, the council produces a Hello Summer programme which contains a mixture of free bookable activities, workshops drop-in sessions and community events taking place across the city, designed to help dispel boredom of the summer holidays. As well as a great range of active sessions, they include theatre, gaming, craft, science workshops, and free outdoor entertainment. The programme can be downloaded online. Hard copies of the booklet are also available from schools, community centres and libraries.

Cllr Anna Smith, Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “I’m thrilled that the city council is supporting such a range of free fun activities across the city this summer. I know how hard it can be to find family activities that don’t break the bank, and that’s why we are supporting these free events.

“The activities are designed for different ages and different interests, and I hope that everyone can find something they enjoy. This is the perfect opportunity to discover a new hobby, enjoy family time and make new friends. I hope to see you at some of our events.”
