We began exploring options for redeveloping the ageing garage block on the junction of East Road and St Matthews Street in 2021.
In 2022, the building partially collapsed in high winds. It was deemed too expensive to repair and was demolished later that year. The site has been fenced off since.
We shared proposals with residents at a meeting in November 2021, which more than 60 residents attended.
We asked for feedback on potential improvements to the estate. These included a proposal to build new homes on the garage site, including affordable homes. More than half of the 64 responses we received supported this proposal.
Our report to the Housing Scrutiny Committee in January 2022 contains more detail.
A more recent report to the committee, in March 2025, set out the challenges posed by the site. Having looked at a number of different options, we have so far been unable to proceed with a planning submission that is financially viable for the council. We will continue to review further options.
We held another meeting in May 2025, which 11 residents attended. We explained the above and provided an update on the use of the site in the meantime.
This redevelopment project is subject to further review and engagement with residents about wider estate improvements.
