The leader of Cambridge City Council plans to write to government ministers to say that he feels that there is no need to postpone this year’s elections.
On 18 December, ministers wrote to the leaders of the 63 councils going through local government reorganisation, asking them whether postponing elections in May 2026 could free up essential capacity for them as they go through the reorganisation process.
Cllr Cameron Holloway, leader of Cambridge City Council, said: "We want to go ahead with elections as planned in May. Different councils will have different circumstances, but we feel that we have the capacity to go ahead with elections this year while also making a success of local government reorganisation. I look forward to continuing to work with and for Cambridge residents in the coming months, and to standing for election in May."
Local government in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough will be reorganised in the coming years, with the first elections to new ‘shadow’ unitary councils taking place in May 2027, and the new councils coming into being in May 2028.
