3C Building Control Service recognised at prestigious national awards

9 March 2023

THE shared Local Authority Building Control service for Cambridge City Council, Huntingdonshire District Council and South Cambridgeshire District Council is celebrating its role in securing two top national awards.

3C Building Control, which checks new buildings are designed and constructed safely and are in line with environmental standards, was jointly awarded with local firm JPT Design Consultants Ltd for ‘Best Partnership with a Local Authority Building Control Team’ at the LABC Building Excellence Awards Grand Finals in London.

Judges described JPT Design’s relationship with 3C Building Control as ‘a clear exemplar of how to work well collaboratively to deliver successful, quality projects.’

3C was also the nominating local authority for ‘Best Non-Residential Site Manager’ award winner, Mark Larter of local company Barnes Construction. The 3C Area Building Control Surveyor who worked on site inspections in collaboration with Mark, commented that ‘lines of communication with building control are excellent, with any issues rectified immediately.’

The LABC Building Excellence Awards focus on the very best in technical innovation and construction quality, helping to raise the level of construction quality across England and Wales, by celebrating the way in which council building control teams work closely with architects and builders to ensure building projects are successfully completed.

Cllr Katie Thornburrow, Executive Councillor for Planning Policy and Transport at Cambridge City Council, said: “I’m thrilled that 3C Building Control have once again been recognised nationally for their tremendous innovation and close work with local firms to drive up standards in the construction industry. It is testament to the role our shared building control service plays in ensuring new buildings in the area are designed and constructed as safely and sustainably as possible.”

Executive Councillor for Corporate & Shared Services at Huntingdonshire District Council, Cllr Martin Hassall, said: “3C Building Control are continuing to showcase their exceptional standard of service to customers. To be nationally recognised for commitment to building standards through effective and impactful partnership working is something that our 3C Building Control team can be extremely proud of. This recognition confirms the team’s place as a shining example of excellence within the UK’s building control services.”

South Cambridgeshire District Council’s Lead Cabinet Member for Planning, Cllr Dr. Tumi Hawkins, said: “Our excellent 3C Building Control team continues to go from strength to strength – and these latest accolades are further evidence of their success, and focus on customers. Their staff have a vast amount of experience and knowledge of all types of buildings and construction methods. If you are planning on carrying out building work at home and need advice, I’d encourage you to get in touch and take advantage of the services they offer.”

3C Building Control service offers independent advice and guidance for large and small building projects, from extensions and loft conversions to major developments

The building control team can help ordinary householders ensure they are complying with all building regulations, and that work is carried out safely and in line with all environmental requirements.

Services offered by 3C Building Control include:

  • Free advice and guidance before a planning application is made
  • Advice on structure and fire safety before and during construction
  • Local site knowledge - such as ground conditions, drainage and existing structures.

The team also offers ongoing advice and support throughout a project and charge at cost, meaning that getting advice at an early stage can help keep costs of a building project down. If people are making improvements to their home or planning building work, they can contact the shared Building Control team for guidance via the phone or book to arrange an inspection visit.
