Four options for local government reorganisation in Cambridgeshire were submitted by the seven local councils in November 2025.
The government is now consulting on these four options. Take part in the consultation - closes Thursday 26 March.
Along with East Cambridgeshire and South Cambridgeshire district councils, we have backed the creation of two new unitary councils for Cambridgeshire:
- one for Greater Cambridge (Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire)
- one for North Cambridgeshire and Peterborough (East Cambridgeshire, Fenland, Huntingdonshire, and Peterborough)
This proposal for reorganising Cambridgeshire's seven councils (into two new councils) is known as option B. Find out more about option B.
In total, four proposals were submitted to government by the Cambridgeshire councils. The government will make a final decision in summer 2026 about which option to implement.
New unitary councils are then due to begin operating in a shadow capacity from May 2027, with full implementation expected in April 2028.

Other option not submitted
In June 2025, the seven Cambridgeshire councils announced three proposed options for possible new unitary councils across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.
This included Option C (pictured). However, none of the councils supported this proposal and it was not submitted to government.
Proposal C would have grouped Peterborough, East Cambridgeshire and Fenland, along with County Council functions in one unitary council; and Cambridge, Huntingdonshire and South Cambridgeshire, along with County Council functions.
