Constitution

The purpose of the Constitution is to set out the rules that govern how the council works.

The Constitution:

  • contains rules setting out the processes by which decisions are made
  • states who is responsible for making decisions
  • contains the rules governing the conduct of meetings
  • includes a variety of rules, codes and procedures relating to the council's finances, employment practices, and buying, selling and letting contracts

The Constitution is updated regularly. Rather than keeping a saved copy, we recommend that you download the latest version – either the full document or individual sections – each time you need it.

We can provide a printed copy – a charge for printing and postage will apply. A copy is available to read at the Guildhall.
