The Large white, often called the "Cabbage white," is a familiar garden butterfly known for its bold white wings with distinctive black tips. It’s one of the largest white butterflies in the UK and is commonly seen fluttering through gardens, parks, and allotments from spring through to autumn.
The species is especially drawn to plants in the brassica family, such as cabbages and kale, where females lay their eggs in clusters. The caterpillars, which are green and yellow with black spots, can feed in large numbers and are considered pests by some gardeners. However, they also play an important role in the food chain, supporting birds and other wildlife.
