Interpreting and translation services

If English is not your first language, we can arrange for an interpreter to help you when you telephone us.

We can also arrange for an interpreter to be present when you meet with us. You must let us know in advance of the meeting if you want us to arrange this for you.

We can provide you with written translations of information about our services in other languages. This can take up to 10 days.

These services are provided free of charge.

Contact us for further information or to request interpreting or translation services.

British Sign Language interpretation

If you are a British Sign Language (BSL) user, you can use a free online service called SignLive to contact us through a professional interpreter.

You can access SignLive free via an app on your smartphone or tablet. If you prefer, you can use a computer with a webcam, microphone and speakers.

When you register to use SignLive you’ll be able to connect with us through their Community Directory. It’s available from 9am to 5pm on Monday to Friday.

Follow the steps below to access SignLive for the first time:

  1. Download the SignLive app from Google Play or the Apple App Store. If you're on a computer, visit SignLive in your web browser.
  2. Register for a SignLive account – complete all the required fields and select Register, then check your inbox for a confirmation email. You can use your Facebook or Google account if you want.
  3. Select ‘Cambridge City Council’ in the Community Directory, and connect to a BSL interpreter who will relay your call to us.
  4. The interpreter will appear on the screen, usually within 40 seconds. The connection is set to mute by default, so you’ll need to turn on the audio when the interpreter appears.

Contact SignLive if you have any problems using the service.
