Insect identification

Most common insects don’t have public health significance and can be safely left alone.

We can identify those few pests of public health significance that can affect residents – such as cockroaches, bed bugs and pharaoh ants.

Send us a photo of the insects by email and we’ll try to identify them for you.

If you need a more detailed identification, Insect Research and Development Ltd might be able to help – a charge will apply.

Avoid infestations

  • Don't leave food waste lying around
  • Avoid piles of rubbish – these can provide a home and food for rodents and insects
  • Maintain your drainage system – repair broken pipes, covers for example
  • Report problems as soon as possible
