Coronavirus: Updates and information

We are adapting our services as the situation changes. For details and to find out how to get help or volunteer to help others, visit our 'Coronavirus: Help for communities' page. Please follow the official NHS and government advice.

Insect identification

Most common insects don’t have public health significance and can be safely left alone.

We can identify those few pests of public health significance that can affect residents – such as cockroaches, bed bugs, lice and pharaoh ants.

We can also sometimes identify other common insects, if a sample is brought to our offices.

If you require a more detailed identification, this service can be provided locally by Insect Research and Development Ltd –  a charge will apply.

Avoid infestations

  • Don't leave food waste lying around
  • Avoid piles of rubbish – these can provide a home and food for rodents and insects
  • Maintain your drainage system – repair broken pipes, covers for example
  • Report problems as soon as possible
