All new driver applications and registrations remain on hold if you have not yet completed our Safeguarding and Knowledge Test.
We are working hard to identifying a safe way to complete our Safeguarding and Knowledge Tests.
If you are due to renew your licence, contact customer services on 01223 457888. They will take your licence fee, so please have your card details ready. We will send you a compact version of the application by email, and we will accept it back by email.
When we have received your application form and the required documentation, we will process your application. We will send you clear instructions of what you need to do next.
If you require a DBS, be sure to submit your renewal application at least of 8 weeks before your licence expires.
When you are set up with the DBS update service you must ensure you keep your card details up to date. The DBS service will always contact you regarding your update service registration. It is your responsibility to ensure you follow DBS instructions.
If you are already in the process of renewing your driver licence, when you have received your DBS, please send a copy to firstname.lastname@example.org along with proof you have signed up to the DBS update service.
Please follow previous timescales for renewing your licence, ensuring you submit your application and required documentation before your licence expiry.
We will send you your licence and PDF version of your badge via email. We will post your badge to your home address shortly afterwards.
We are still providing 3-month extensions for medicals. If you are due a medical between 16 March and 30 September 2020 you will have a 3-month extension, from expiry. Please book your required medical appointment prior to the expiry of extended date.
If you have already been granted a 3-month extension and as yet have been unable to attain an appointment, please do so as soon as surgeries allow.
When you are able to obtain a medical please send a copy of the full document via email to email@example.com.
This will not stop you from being able to renew your licence if it is due to expire, but if your medical circumstances change you must notify us within 7 days.
We are now processing new vehicle applications.
Before purchasing a new vehicle to be licenced with Cambridge City Council, ensure you have read the vehicle specification which can be found in the Hackney Carriage and Private ire Licensing policy and Handbook.
Since 1 April 2020, all new licensed saloon vehicles must be ultra-low or zero emission. This applies to both taxis (hackney carriages) and private-hire vehicles.
- Ultra-low emission vehicles are plug-in hybrid vehicles or extended range electric vehicles (E-Rev) with CO2 emissions less than 75g per km
- Zero-emission vehicles are those that emit no emissions during their operation. These include battery electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, and electric vehicles

You will need to book an appointment with the garage for a Certificate of Compliance, please email email@example.com for further instructions on how to obtain your new licence.
Vehicle licence renewals
If you are due to renew your licence, please contact customer services on 01223 457888. The customer service advisor will then email you with a new compact application form along with clear instructions on what to do next. Within the email you will be asked to return the completed application form along with additional documentation that we require via e-mail. When you call customer services you will be required to pay the licence fee, please have your card details ready when calling.

Once we have received your application form and required documentation, we will process your application.
Licences and PDF versions of vehicle plates will be sent via e-mail. Your plate will be sent to your home address, shortly after.
Certificates of compliance
If your current certificate of compliance is due to expire, the following changes apply;
Mid-year certificate of compliance
If your vehicle is due its mid-year certificate, you do not need to book an appointment with the garage. We will write to you confirming your current certificate is extended to the expiry of your current vehicle license.
Vehicle renewal certificate of compliance
If your vehicle is up for renewal, you do not need to book an appointment with the garage. We will issue you a 6-month extension on your current certificate, when issuing your licence and plate.
Your vehicle licence is only eligible for one certificate extension granted by us. You must ensure you book an appointment with the garage before your extended certificate expires.
Change of ownership
If you want to complete a change of ownership, we are now accepting applications via email. Contact us for further information on the new process. We are currently unable to add anyone to a plate if they have not undertaken the safeguarding course.

Temporary surrendering of vehicle licence
Vehicle proprietors have the option to voluntarily surrender their vehicle licence for a period of 3 months. This means your vehicle would not be considered as a licensed vehicle for this vehicle. Contact us for further information. If you have or are intending to SORN your vehicle with DVLA, please contact us.
DBS for non-driver proprietors
We only require a basic DBS for non-driver applicants. As a council we are unable to accept Enhanced DBS for the purpose of such applications, even if you are registered on the update service.
