Councillors are also reminding residents that during the celebrations over the long weekend, there are ways to minimise the amount of waste generated. Finding alternative approaches and being savvy with food waste can reduce the amount of waste produced. Greater Cambridge Shared Waste, a partnership between Cambridge City and South Cambridgeshire District Councils, has created a Waste-Less Event Guide to help organisers.
Cllr Brian Milnes, South Cambridgeshire District Council's Lead Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “In addition to checking your bin collections dates, if you are hosting or attending celebrations over the long weekend, encourage your community to bring their own zero-waste items with them (coffee cup, bottle, cutlery etc.). A reminder that compostable paper/plastic cups are not accepted in the green bins so if you opt for disposables, the best choices are plain paper plates and clear plastic cups.”
Cllr Rosy Moore, Cambridge City Council's Executive Councillor for Environment, Climate Change and Biodiversity, added: “We know the importance of reducing food waste as much as possible as this has direct links to climate change. It's a simple step that we can all take, and we encourage you to apply this to the events being held over the long weekend. If you're hosting, do your best to buy the right quantities (which can be quite hard) so just in case, have a plan for the surplus food afterwards and if you do have any food waste then put it in your green bin. Remember that leftovers can make great meals.”
