An awards scheme to celebrate Greater Cambridge’s building design and construction industries is now open for submissions.
The Greater Cambridge Shared Planning Service and the Cambridge Forum for the Construction Industry are inviting entries for the Greater Cambridge Design and Construction Awards 2022, which are now open to projects in all of South Cambridgeshire for the first time.
The awards celebrate the best in the design and construction of our built environment, and the skilled people who make it happen. Previous winners of the awards include the Cambridge Central Mosque, which went on to win the Stirling Prize 2021 People’s Vote, and conservation the of the grade II* listed David Parr House.
Formerly the Cambridge Design and Construction Awards, the scheme has now been enlarged to cover all of Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire. Judging for the Building Awards covers all aspects of the building including, design, sustainability, engineering, workmanship, and construction. The Contractor Awards are new this year and will recognise the major contribution contractors make during the construction phase of a project in terms of innovation, sustainability, and community. The People Awards celebrate the achievement of individuals working within the Construction Industry across the categories of young professional, apprentice, and site manager. With the extension of the awards scheme to cover South Cambridgeshire as well as the city, South Cambridgeshire District Council’s Lead Cabinet Member for Planning Policy and Delivery, Councillor Dr Tumi Hawkins, will join the panel of judges for the Building Awards. Other members of the panel include Dame Fiona Reynolds, Chair and former Master of Emmanuel College Cambridge, Councillor Katie Thornburrow Executive Councillor for Planning Policy and Transport (Cambridge City Council), architects Meredith Bowles, February Phillips and Tom Foggin and engineer Joel Gustaffson. They will be joined by the Chair of the Greater Cambridge Design Review Panel.
Cllr Katie Thornburrow, Executive Councillor for Planning Policy and Transport, Cambridge City Council, said: ‘This area is rightly celebrated nationally for the quality of architecture and urban design in our new buildings. These awards celebrate the best work from our construction sector at the whole range of scales, from small projects to major schemes. The expansion of the Design and Construction Awards to include the new Contractor and People Awards from this year allows us to highlight the number of people and variety of skills that contribute to the success of the construction industry in the local area, and the high level of professionalism that they attain.’
Councillor Dr Tumi Hawkins, South Cambridgeshire District Council’s Lead Cabinet Member for Planning, said: ‘The extension of the scheme to cover the whole of the Greater Cambridge area means we can rightly celebrate the great projects that have been built recently in South Cambridgeshire, and will encourage more schemes to aim for the highest possible standards of design. These awards allow the two Councils to showcase what can be achieved when developers and the local authority work together to deliver the best for our local communities.’
If you know of a recently completed building project, contractor or person working in the construction industry that you think is deserving of recognition then please consider entering them for the Greater Cambridge Design and Construction Awards 2022.
Entries should be submitted by 7 January 2022, and the award winners will be announced in a ceremony in March 2022.
Submissions should be made through the Awards page on the Greater Cambridge Shared Planning website.
