Mayor launches Volunteer for Cambridge Awards to recognise community heroes

News release from 13/11/2020

TODAY sees the launch of The Mayor of Cambridge’s Volunteer for Cambridge Awards for 2020-2021.

The awards will formally recognise the outstanding contributions that volunteers, community groups, organisations and businesses have made in supporting residents in Cambridge during the coronavirus crisis.

Since the start of lockdown, many people across Cambridge have given up their time to support others including by delivering medication and meals to vulnerable people, making scrubs and masks for frontline staff, and a whole host of different ways.

The Mayor, Cllr Russ McPherson, is launching the first Volunteer for Cambridge Awards to celebrate the incredible community spirit shown this year, and is asking residents to nominate their own community heroes for an award.

There are four nomination categories:

  • Individual Volunteer
  • Community Group and Organisation
  • Business
  • Young Person Volunteer (18 and below)

Residents who would like to nominate a person, business or organisation for any of these award categories can complete a straightforward nomination form on the council website at https://www.cambridge.gov.uk/volunteer-for-cambridge-awards which should take no longer than five minutes to complete. Printed copies of the form are available by phoning 01223 457878.

People can submit nominations at any time as the award scheme will remain open until at least March 2021. The Mayor will consider nominations in six-week cycles and recommend individuals and organisations for awards.

Cllr McPherson said: “Coronavirus continues to present a significant challenge to us all. There are many people in Cambridge who have needed additional help and support during these difficult times and I have been humbled by those who have come forward to help in countless different ways. I would like to know more about the kindness and support so many have given, and may still give, and to say thank you to you all.”
