North Pole ice rink on Parker's Piece to be cancelled this year due to coronavirus pandemic

News release from 14 October 2020

THE ANNUAL North Pole temporary ice rink on Parker’s Piece has been cancelled for its planned 2020 season due to the continuing risk of coronavirus, it has been announced.

Cambridge City Council and organisers Arena Group gave careful consideration to whether or not to operate the ice rink across the Christmas season this year.

Although current Government guidelines would allow for an ice rink to be open, it was felt that for the safety of residents and visitors, the popular attraction should not take place this year.

Cllr Katie Thornburrow, Executive Councillor for Planning Policy and Open Spaces, said: “We are very disappointed to have to cancel the North Pole Cambridge ice rink attraction, which we had hoped could go ahead this year.”

“The current uncertainties around coronavirus infection rates concern us so in the interests of protecting public health we have decided not to continue planning for 2020, but very much hope we will be able to stage it again next year.

A spokesperson for Arena Group: “In the current climate, and with so many uncertainties, it is in everyone’s interest that we do what we can to manage the pandemic and cancel this year’s event.

“We are extremely saddened by this, but look forward to being back next year with an event to be remembered. We will of course be offering customers who have already booked full refunds.”
