THAI restaurant chain, Giggling Squid, is set to open a new Cambridge restaurant at the rear of the Cambridge City Council owned Guildhall next year.
Giggling Squid will occupy the property formerly used by Jamie’s Italian following a comprehensive re-fit.
Jamie’s Italian ceased trading in May and the property has been vacant since then while administrators worked to assign the lease.
The council has worked with the administrators and will incur no financial loss as a result of Jamie’s Italian closing, in spite of the property being vacant for a period of time.
Cllr Lewis Herbert, Leader of the City Council, said: “The area behind the Guildhall is a great location for a wide range of restaurants and cafes. This is something the council recognised when it helped to create the first retail opportunity in the wonderful old library that opens on to Wheeler Street that is an anchor for further similar projects nearby.
“While we were very sad to see Jamie’s Italian close, it is great news that Giggling Squid have decided to move in and widen further the food offer in the thriving group of restaurants and cafes now operating in that area.
“Investing wisely and making the most of our buildings and other assets so they earn a return for our residents and the local economy is a priority for the council, so I am particularly pleased that we have been able to avoid any financial loss arising from the sudden collapse of Jamie’s Italian chain.”
