Crematorium temporarily closed this weekend for new access road completion

News release from 12/03/2019

CAMBRIDGE City Council’s crematorium and cemetery on Huntingdon Road will temporarily close this weekend while a new access road off the A1307 is completed.

The closure starts at 6pm on Friday 15 March and will last until 8am on Monday 18 March.

During this time work will be carried out to complete the new access road that will make it much easier to get to the crematorium.

Due to the nature of the works complete closure of the site is unavoidable to ensure public safety.

On Monday 18 March the site will reopen with usual access from the A14. This route in to the crematorium will be permanently closed overnight, so that from Tuesday 19 March all access will be from the new local access road off the A1307.

Signage will be in place to assist people travelling to the crematorium and cemetery via the new route.

The council has been in close contact with the Highways Agency and county council in advance of the works.

Cllr Katie Thornburrow, Executive Councillor for Streets and Open Spaces, said: “From next week the new access road will make it much easier to get to the crematorium and cemetery on Huntingdon Road which will be welcome news for all of those who use the service.

“While we would prefer to be open it is important for public safety reasons that we temporarily close this weekend.”

Cllr Thornburrow added: “Being bereaved is the most difficult of times for families and friends and everybody wants to be reassured that their loved one will be cared for with compassion and dignity.

“Our Bereavement Services team prides itself on providing a caring and compassionate service with options for burial, cremation and commemoration of loved ones so I would encourage people to find out more by getting in touch.”

Staff are on hand to offer advice and help with making funeral arrangements and structuring a unique and fitting funeral service.
