CAMBRIDGE City Council is to offer free text messages to remind people using cashless payments when their car parking ticket is about to run out.
From 1 October, motorists using the new JustPark app on their smartphone to pay for parking at the council’s pay and display car parks can opt to receive a free text message confirming payment.
To help customers, they will then get a second free text message reminding them that their parking period is coming to an end. Customers can then opt to extend their stay by text
The changes come with the start of a new cashless payment contract between the council and provider JustPark.
JustPark replaces the previous supplier, RingGo, and regular customers should download the JustPark app or register for the service to continue cashless payment at a council car park.
The change also sees the fee for using cashless payments reduce by 70% to 3p per transaction.
Cllr Kevin Blencowe, Executive Councillor for Planning Policy and Transport, said: “Cashless car parking has proven popular with our customers because it is fast, convenient and simple to use.
“There is no need to hunt around for the correct change and there is less chance of forgetting when your ticket runs out.
“We will continue to listen to our customers’ feedback, future-proofing and improving the service.”
Just as before, customers can pay for parking by credit or debit card through the JustPark app or over the phone.
Anyone who does not have a smartphone can ring the standard rate telephone number 01223 622 910 at the time they want to park. The number will be shown on signs on the payment machines.

Customers using the service for the first time will be asked for information about their vehicle, the five digit location code shown on the signs which identify the car park that they are in and details of their payment card.
Once registered, JustPark will recognise a customer’s mobile phone number and will retrieve the information they have previously supplied, making the payment simple and speedy. Customers will just have to provide the location code, duration of stay in hours and/or minutes and the last 4 digits of their registered card to book their stay.
