Sprinkler systems to be upgraded at multi-storey car parks

WORK to upgrade sprinkler systems at two of Cambridge City Council’s multi-storey car parks has started.

The existing sprinkler and fire suppression systems on the below-ground levels of Grand Arcade car park are being fully upgraded, with work starting earlier this week.

The work at Grand Arcade car park will be carried out initially during less busy operating periods of the day and night, and then at night only from 1 April.

The main upper areas of the Grand Arcade car park will not be affected and only one level of the car park will be affected at any one time. Systems will be in place to divert car park users.

Once the work at Grand Arcade car park is complete, the sprinkler and fire suppression system at Queen Anne Terrace car park will be upgraded.

Measures have been put in place at both car parks to manage fire risks and meet all fire regulations while the work is ongoing.

These improvement works were agreed in January 2017 as part of a £1.4m investment programme which has been carried out during the last year at the council’s multi-storey car parks. This has also seen:

  • A new protective deck coating, improved drainage systems and re-marked traffic routes and parking bays at Grand Arcade car park;
  • Structural repairs including improvements to stairwells at Queen Anne Terrace car park;
  • Repairs to the roof at Grafton East car park.

Cllr Kevin Blencowe, Executive Councillor for Planning Policy and Transport, said: “The work to upgrade the sprinkler and fire suppression systems at our multi-storey car parks is important to ensure that we continue to provide the safe facilities expected by the thousands of people who use them.

“We have planned the work to try and minimise disruption to car park users, and thank our customers for their understanding while it is carried out.”
