Coronavirus: NHS and government guidance

We all need to take action to spread out the peak of this illness, to help our health services manage demand and protect the most vulnerable in our communities.

Follow the NHS’s coronavirus guidance and the government’s coronavirus advice.

Everyone must stay alert to help control the virus:

  • Stay at home as much as possible
  • Work from home if you can
  • Limit contact with other people
  • Keep your distance if you go out – two metres apart where possible
  • Wash your hands regularly
  • Do not leave home if you or anyone in your household has symptoms

Read the government’s coronavirus FAQs: what you can and can’t do. See also their guidance on:

If you or someone you live with have symptoms, you can ask for a test to check if you have coronavirus.

Stop the infection spreading

To help reduce the risk of you and anyone you live with getting ill with coronavirus, the NHS recommends:

  • do wash your hands (NHS video) with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds
  • do use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available
  • do wash your hands as soon as you get home
  • do cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze
  • do put used tissues in the bin immediately and wash your hands afterwards
  • do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean
