The
City of Cambridge benefits from a wide range of publicly sited works
of art. These make an important contribution to the character and
visual qualities of the City. Historically this has been the result
of conscious decisions by enlightened public
and private commissioners to employ the services of artists in the
design of buildings and landscapes.
Today, an increasing
number of public artworks are being commissioned as part of new
developments. These should
help to create an attractive and distinctive public realm, further
adding to the visual richness of the City.
Although some of the public artwork is prominently located
and well known, there remain many pieces of art which are
not so well known, or where little is known of its origins
and/or creators. This Public Art Audit aims to provide
information and to raise awareness of the wealth of public art in
and around Cambridge.
Maps of the City can be viewed by selecting the area you wish to
see on the button links in the left hand margin. These maps show
the locations of public art, and clicking a numbered 'hotspot' will
take you to photographs and descriptions of pieces at that location.
This is an on-going project, and the Council encourages everyone
to provide further information where they can. |

In this way the audit should develop into a comprehensive and up-to-date
record to help recognise and celebrate the public art of Cambridge.
