Over recent years the planning system has undergone major changes with the introduction of the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act in 2004.  Under the new system the Local Plan will eventually be replaced by a new set of planning documents referred to as the Local Development Framework.  The 2006 Local Plan policies will be saved until 2009 during which time the City Council will start to bring forward the new Local Development Framework, which along with the following documents will make up the new development plan for Cambridge:

The Local Plan Process

The 2006 Cambridge Local Plan was formally adopted at a meeting of Full Council on the 20th July 2006, following a period of review which began in 2001 as set out in the table below.  The Plan comes into operation on its adoption and sets out the policies and proposals to guide future development in the city.

A Notice of Adoption was published in the Cambridge Evening News and the London Gazette.  This set out a six-week period, commencing on the 25th July, when any person aggrieved by the proposals who wishes to question their validity, could make an application to the High Court.  A legal challenge to the adoption of the Local Plan was made by Ashwell (Barton Road) Limited.  The City Council received the High Court judgement on the 20th July 2007, which was in favour of the City Council.  Ashwell have been granted leave to appeal this decision by the Court of Appeal, and a hearing at the High Court is expected to take place in June 2008.  Further details of this appeal will be made available on this page in due course.
