The following offers preliminary guidance for common instances where planning permission or consent is required.

If the development or works you are proposing are not listed here, please contact the Duty Planning Officer for advice as to whether permission is required.

In addition to the information contained here, the Planning Portal is a valuable resource, containing a range of general information which is needed to make an application, as well as guidance as to when planning permission is required.

Do I need permission for...

Extensions/alterations to Houses and Flats - In most cases an application will need to be submitted for the extension of a house or flat.  However, some minor developments, for example a small house extension may be able to be built under 'Permitted Development Rights'.
For roof extensions you may wish to refer to the 'Cambridge City Council Roof Extension Design Guide'.  The Communities and Local Government website contains a document called 'Planning - A Guide for Householders'.  This booklet is also available from the Planning reception.

The erection of new building/s and extensions/alterations to non-residential building - Unless the works are minor, the above developments require planning permission.

Please see our guidance notes which accompany the application forms for information on what should be submitted with an application.
