We are a highly experienced team here to provide advice on the conservation aspects of the city's built environment.

Although much of our work is involved with the development control process we also:

  • give free advice to citizens on the repair, restoration and alteration of historic buildings,
  • advise on the likelihood of buildings being listed, and assess the suitability of proposed works to buildings which are listed,
  • advise on the management of complex historic buildings through conservation plans / services strategies and help owners reconcile historic buildings,
  • propose areas to be designated as conservation areas and produce appraisal / management documents for existing conservation areas,
  • advise on possible grant aid for historic building projects and run grant schemes for historic buildings and areas, and
  • encourage interest in the city and its buildings through talks, the production of information leaflets and through the Blue Plaques and David Urwin Award Schemes.
