The Olympic torch

We are keen to ensure that the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games leaves a positive legacy and everyone has an opportunity to be involved.

Whether you're inspired by the London 2012 games to play, coach or watch sport, or volunteer or participate in local cultural opportunities, we hope you will join us in celebrating the Olympics in Cambridge.

Volunteering

The Sports Development Service support the national Sport Makers programme which aims to work with people who'd like to make sport happen in their local community. It is part of Sport England's "Places People Play" legacy programme that is bringing the magic of a home Olympic and Paralympic Games into communities across the country.

Sport Makers aims to inspire 600 people in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough to get involved, with each of them spending at least 10 hours organising or leading sporting activities. It is open to anyone aged 16 and over and focuses on increasing adult participation.

To register for Sportsmakers as an interested potential volunteer or if you are a sports club that would like to register your volunteering opportunities, please visit www.sportmakers.co.uk

All of the Sports Development "Games Inspired" opportunities will be listed on the Sportsmakers website.

A Sport Makers convention has been organised Sunday 22nd January from 2 - 4:30pm at Cambridge Regional College. Those that attend the Sport Makers convention will learn more about opportunities to make sport happen in their local community.

The Cambridge 2012 Group

The Sports Strategy 2009-13 highlighted the opportunity to the council of the London 2012 Olympic, Paralympic and Cultural Olympiad.

The local Cambridge 2012 Group was established in 2010 in order to develop local plans to maximise the benefit of 2012, create legacy and support celebration of the Cultural Olympiad.

Emerging priorities for the group include:

  • Creating positive role models
  • Encouraging community involvement
  • Advocate the role of sport and culture in the community
  • Creating a lasting legacy and powerful legacy for the city

The next Cambridge 2012 meeting is on 21 February 2pm at Mandela House.

For information about the London Olympics itself and what's happening around the country, go to London 2012 or GOLD - the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Coordinating Group's dedicated Olympics website.

The Cambridge Olympic action plan brings together the priorities of the local group; the county members champion group, GOLD and the Cambridge Sport Network. The plan highlights activities from 2010-2013 and the role that Cambridge City Council and key stakeholders can play.
