Disabled people can find getting around the city more difficult than others, so we try to help make the streetscape easier by providing up-to-date information about transport services.
Blue Badge Parking Permits
The Blue Badge Parking scheme (formerly Orange Badge Parking) allows disabled people to park for free or at a reduced cost in Cambridge.
All of the major car parks have designated spaces for Blue Badge holders and there is also a number of on-street Blue Badge spaces around the City Centre.
A map of Blue Badge parking spaces in Cambridge and elsewhere across the UK is available on the DirectGov website (please note that we are not responsible for the accuracy of this map).
- Please
contact Cambridgeshire County Council
on 0845 045 5212 or visit their web site
to find out if you are eligible for a Blue Badge Parking Permit.
If you know you are eligible you can apply for a Blue Badge Parking Permit online.
Shopmobility
Shopmobility is a free scheme which gives everybody with a mobility problem access to and around Cambridge City Centre.
Services are available from Park Street Car Park and the Grafton Centre Car Park and include the use of manual or electric wheelchairs and scooters. An escort service is available on weekdays for wheelchair users and the blind or visually impaired; this service must be booked in advance.
Transport
Cambridge has a good bus network, with buses operating every ten minutes on most routes. There is also a good park and ride service with modern low floor buses on all park and ride routes.
Concessionary bus passes are available to people with disabilities and those over the age of 60. Senior Railcards giving 1/3 off standard and first class train fares, are available to Cambridge residents aged 60 and over can be bought from the Council at a reduced price. Disabled Railcards also give 1/3 off rail fares, visit www.disabledpersons-railcard.co.uk/ for details.
For those who are unable to use conventional public transport there are two schemes designed to help:
- Dial-a-Ride is a registered charity that provides a door-to-door minbus service from Monday to Friday.
- Taxicards are available to certain people to provide reductions on taxi fares.
Accessing Council Buildings
All Cambridge City Council buildings are fully accessible to everybody and many have implemented facilities such as induction loop systems and direction signs in Braille and tactile lettering to make our services more accessible for disabled people.
