The Council uses a series of plans, policies and strategies to translate its aims into action. They show how we are going to achieve our aims.

These key objectives set out what the local plan aims to achieve.

  • The careful conservation and enhancement of historic areas and green spaces, and the promotion of the highest possible standard of design in new development
  • The consolidation and improvement of existing residential communities, the promotion of new housing and community facilities in the growth areas, and a greater emphasis on meeting diverse housing needs
  • The protection and enhancement of open spaces and leisure and shopping facilities
  • The promotion of employment growth in sustainable and accessible locations to support the future expansion of education, research, knowledge-based industries and essential services
  • The provision of appropriate infrastructure, in particular transport infrastructure, to support new developments and promote more sustainable living patterns
  • A co-ordinated and responsive approach to the implementation of the various components of the strategy
