The Sports Development Service is part of the Active Communities department at the council. We work in partnership with a number of different agencies to coordinate opportunities for people to take part in sport and physical activities, as well as promoting the health benefits of an active lifestyle in line with local and national priorities.
In 2000, we were awarded a Charter mark by the Government for achieving excellence in service standards.
We work on the following project areas:
Active Cambridge
Active Cambridge. This Scheme has been awarded £895,000 from the Big Lottery Fund, established to support innovative schemes that improve local infrastructure and encourage people to develop more active lifestyles. The award will go towards capital and revenue projects in the Abbey, Arbury, East & West Chesterton and Kings Hedges wards.
CitySport
The CitySport project forms partnerships with clubs and coaches to create accessible opportunities for people of all ages to participate in sport at an introductory level and create pathways into local clubs.
New brochures are printed in February each year and distributed through Schools, Community Centres, Sports Centres, Libraries and various other venues across the City.
Club and coach development
We work with local sports clubs and other organisations to develop clubs and coaches in a number of ways, including assisting in the establishment of new sections, promoting sports equity and assisting organisations with development plans and funding applications.
We also help plan and coordinate training and development opportunities to support local sport coaches and volunteers.
Disability Sport
We facilitate and work in partnership with the Cambridge Disability Sport focus group to provide a programme of integrated and separate opportunities for children and adults with disabilities.
We also organise an annual Disability Sports festival in partnership with South Cambridgeshire District Council Sports Development Service and support the Youth Games+.
Forever Active
Forever Active The Forever Active sessions are exercise sessions, which are suitable for the over 50 age group as well as for those returning to a more active lifestyle.
There are a variety of different sessions on offer, which cater for a wide range of abilities.
Living Sport
Living Sport is one of 49 County Sports Partnerships in the UK, created by Sport England to raise the profile of sport across the country.
Living Sport intend to get more people active and playing sport throughout the area and to also ensure that everyone who wants to achieve in sport is fully supported to do so.
Work with schools
We work closely with local schools including Netherhall Specialist Sports College, the County Local Education Authority Sports Development Officer and PE Advisor to support sport in schools.
This includes work around the School Sports Coordinator Programme, after-school clubs and Active Mark applications. A Sports Festival, SPORTSfest+, is held each year, to promote greater awareness and potential enjoyment of sporting opportunities amongst young people.
