Reports on the CCTV service for Cambridge City, Ely and Soham and a System Overview, Code of Practice and Deployment Guidelines

CCTV camera

The purpose of our CCTV system is to make Cambridge a safer and more welcoming place at any time of the day or night - allowing all citizens and visitors the opportunity to participate fully and without fear in the life of the city.

Cambridge City Council's CCTV system began on 26 August 1997 with 31 cameras in and around the city centre.

Today there are 157 cameras in the system covering Cambridge. These are operated from the Guildhall in Market Square in Cambridge.

CCTV texting alert system

The most effective way of tackling crime, anti-social behaviour and terrorism is through the public being vigilant and reporting suspicious activity.

If you see something wrong within an area covered by our cameras you can contact the CCTV control room directly by texting 62288.

You can easily remember this number by thinking:

6 Mobile
2 C
2 C
8 T
8 V

All messages will be acknowleged and operators will prioritise the messages received and then carry out follow up action. Please remember to always call the police first by calling 999 for serious incidents and 0845 4564564 in all other cases.

Texts to the CCTV control room should include details of the street, city and a brief description of what is happening, eg "Market Square, Cambridge, fight".

Text messages to 62288 cost 12p on Vodaphone and 10p on other mobile networks.
