Transport planning - cycling and walking
Cambridge has the highest level of cycling in the country with 1 in 4 residents cycling to work.
However, we realise that there is more that needs to be done to encourage people to walk and cycle in Cambridge, and the Cambridge Walking and Cycling Strategy sets out how the City Council aims to achieve this.

Cyclists can use Google Maps to plan the perfect journey and browse thousands of photos of points of interest along cycle routes.

Expansion of the city cycle network
The projected urban expansion of Cambridge presents a unique opportunity to prioritise cycling as a mode of transport. Plans for a wider cycle network should provide high-quality, safe and convenient routes through and to the new developments, and improve links between the city and surrounding villages.
Supplementary planning guidance identifies and safeguards strategic cycle routes through the areas of the urban expansions in the redeposit Local Plan, in order to ensures their delivery by developers. To view the documents and maps, visit our Planning Guidance pages.
Shared paths
The many paths and pavements designated for cycling in Cambridge require both pedestrians and cyclists to take care and to respect the needs of other users.
Cyclists should always give way to pedestrians and be aware of the effect of inconsiderate behaviour, especially on more vulnerable pedestrians such as the elderly or visually impaired.
The City Council has produced a leaflet to encourage considerate cycling, and a copy of this can be obtained from Clare Rankin. Alternatively you can download the leaflet by selecting the link in Related Items.
Safer cycling
The Adult Cycle Training Scheme provides group or one-to-one cycle training and is geared to the needs of each participant, whether it be techniques for riding safely and confidently in traffic, or learning to ride a bike from scratch.
