Cambridge City Council has a number of responsibilities for street naming and property numbering, including:
- assigning official street names to new and existing streets
- assigning official property numbers to all new and existing properties
- ensuring that Royal Mail is informed of new or amended property addresses to enable them to assign post codes
- ensuring that the emergency services are informed of all new and amended property addresses
There is a charge for the non-statutory provision of our street naming and property numbering service - see the table further down this page for the list of charges.
All names and numbers are issued in accordance with our Street Naming and Property Numbering Policy (.pdf).

New developments
If you are undertaking a new development that will require the allocation of new addresses or new street names, please contact us as soon as possible. The process can be lengthy.
Subdividing or adding to your property
Whether you are subdividing your property or building a new dwelling within the grounds of an existing property, you will need to contact us after planning permission and building regulation consent have been obtained.
Naming your property
You are able to name your property, although we recommend that you continue to use the official street number as well as the name in all correspondence.
In order to prevent the duplication of names in the same locality we are happy to assist with any name change that you propose to adopt.
