Guide to extending your home

The Cambridgeshire Guide to Extending Your Home has been written to provide useful information about a range of typical domestic projects and how they are affected by building regulations.

Competent persons schemes

Many jobs in the home need to be notified to and approved by our Building Control service, unless carried out by an installer who is registered with a competent person scheme.

Micro-renewable energy guidance for householders

We are keen to promote the uptake of domestic-scale renewable energy, generally referred to as 'micro-renewables', around the city.

The aim of this guide is to clarify what permissions and consents are currently required to install these micro-renewable technologies.

Inclusive environments access guide

This document contains the most important aspects of the building regulations approved document M, entitled Access to and Use of Buildings (2004 Edition).

It is used to illustrate the philosophy of a person making a journey to, within and away from aspects of the built environment.

This document aims to foster a more inclusive approach to design that accommodates the needs of all people.

Guidance and information is now offered on a wide range of topics, including audience and spectator facilities, together with refreshment and sanitary facilities, sleeping accommodation and the location of switches, outlets and controls.

You can download the inclusive environments access guide.

Guide to loft conversions

Most houses have a large space under their roofs, normally known as the loft or attic. This space can offer an ideal opportunity for expanding your home.

The guide to loft conversions has been written to provide you with useful information about how building regulations will affect your loft conversion project.

Electrical safety

All electrical work required to meet building control electrical safety requirements must be designed, installed, inspected and tested by a person competent to do so.

Prior to completion, the council should be satisfied that part P has been complied with.

This may require an appropriate BS 7671 electrical installation certificate to be issued for the work by a person competent to do so.

You can download the electrical safety guidance notes or obtain a copy from building control at the Guildhall.

Consequential improvements

Consequential improvements are energy efficiency improvements. This guide only highlights the main works likely to be encountered where they will apply.

The full requirements can found found within approved documents L1B and L2B of the Building Regulations 2000 (as amended), which can be found on the Planning Portal website.

You can download the consequential improvements technical information or obtain a copy from the Building Control team at the Guildhall.
