Jesus Green: by the river

The improved river walk, piazza, kiosk, toilets, play area and cycle ramp and the new performance space, pool entrance and cafe

Diagram showing the river walk by Jesus Green pool and new piazza

The area along the river provides the main hub of activity on Jesus Green, with the footbridge across the Cam, the kiosk, toilets and lock keepers cottage all centred on this small space.

The vision for this area is to create a wider pathway along the river encouraging people to stroll into the green towards the central piazza area from which the new pool entrance and cafe facility, play area and seating will be accessible.

River or ‘boulevard’ walk

The widened river walk will provide better links between facilities on the site, for example the river crossings, toilets, pool entrance and other neighbouring localities such as Midsummer Common.

The boulevard will have the mature trees along the centre of the path and will be interspersed with new seating.

Performance space

A space will be retained for smaller events such as band concerts and theatre productions.

Play area

Installation of a newly equipped play area to be relocated between the new
‘piazza’ and pool.

More visible, accessible and better integration with other facilities such as the pool and proposed café facility.

New pool entrance and cafe facility

Construction of a new building at the western end of the pool, which will incorporate a new entrance to the pool, cafe facility, toilets and meeting room.

The new build will provide a more visible and accessible entrance to the pool and provide a better integration between the pool and the green.

Piazza

Rationalisation of the ‘hub’ area at the foot of the bridge to create a well-populated piece of urban space.

Incorporating the lock keepers cottage, new kiosk and toilets and retaining the large London plane as focal point

New seating, lighting and reconfigured bridge landing

New kiosk and toilets

Removal of Rouse pavilion and existing kiosk, which would be replaced by a new building incorporating toilets and small concession, such as an ice cream vendor. (Similar in layout to the building on Parkers Piece)

Lock keepers cottage

Possibility of city council leasing the lock keepers cottage to provide an information / visitors centre / park keepers' base.

Integrate the building into the piazza space by removal of surrounding wall.
