Plans to save £250,000 per year on waste collections

Cambridge City Council will be reorganising refuse and recycling collections in the city in order to make services more efficient and save money. The new proposals will result in savings of £250,000 per year by reducing the number of vehicles operated, whilst maintaining levels of service.

The council has also considered whether it would be more efficient for collections to operate on a four-day-week basis. However, after looking at the operational benefits and consulting with staff and residents it has been decided to remain with the five-days-a-week collections.

Cllr Jean Swanson, Executive Councillor for Environmental and Waste Services, said: “We have considered this very carefully and listened to feedback from our staff. We believe that continuing to collect bins five days a week will give us more flexibility to provide residents with a high standard of service. We will be better able to catch up collections during adverse weather for example, or if vehicles break down.”

The council is now consulting staff on the details of the new collection arrangements. The changes will mean that bin collection days for households across the city will change in July.
