Council to consult on Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Enforcement Policy

1 February 2012

Cambridge City Council’s Licensing Committee has resolved to undertake a public consultation on a proposed Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Enforcement Policy. The draft policy outlines the enforcement options that are available to the Council and how they will be used to deal with licensed drivers, vehicle proprietors and operators who fail to meet the standards that are expected by the Council. It will ensure that a consistent approach is taken based on the principles of courtesy and helpfulness, clear standards and practices, consistency, openness and proportionality, which is in line with the Council’s overarching enforcement policy.

Councillor Julie Smith, Chair of the Licensing Committee, said “The Council expects its licensed drivers, operators and vehicle proprietors to deliver a safe, courteous and reliable service to the public. The majority of licence holders provide this, but the Council will not tolerate those who fail to comply with their conditions or legal obligations, or whose conduct brings in to question whether they are a “fit and proper person” who should continue to hold a licence. It is hoped that an adopted enforcement policy that sets out the graduated steps that the Council will take will encourage good conduct.”

The 12 week public consultation period will commence on 13 February 2012 and the draft policy will then become available on the Council’s website.
