Conservation areas to be surveyed

News release from 23 February 2010

Cambridge City Council has commissioned consultants The Conservation Studio to carry out Conservation Area Appraisals of West Cambridge, and of Mill Road with Romsey.

These appraisals, which will be detailed studies of the character of the areas, form part of the council’s Pro-active Conservation Programme. The surveys will start with West Cambridge, looking at the area between Barton Road and Huntingdon Road (but excluding Storey’s Way and Conduit Head Road, both of which have their own individual characters and recent appraisals). The consultants will go on to review the 1999 appraisal of the Mill Road and St Matthews Area, extending their survey to include Romsey Town and the whole length of Mill Road. This responds to public requests to consider Romsey for possible conservation area designation.

The consultants will submit their draft Appraisals to the council. The drafts will be the subject of public consultation in Summer 2010.

On 16 March the council’s Environment Scrutiny Committee will consider recommendations for further appraisal work to be carried out in early 2010-11. The suggested priorities are the following remaining parts of existing Conservation Areas which do not yet have an appraisal: the Castle area, Riverside, New Town, and the Glisson Road area.

All the council’s completed Conservation Area Appraisals can now be viewed on the website.
