Fraudster sentenced to community work

News release from 2 February 2010

A benefit fraudster who claimed welfare benefits while secretly working has been sentenced to 100 hours unpaid work after the authorities uncovered his wrongdoing.

In a joint exercise, officers from Cambridge City Council and the Department for Work and Pensions investigated Mr Daniel Bartram, 31, of Wycliffe Road.

They discovered that he had been seeking employment through agencies and then hiding the fact from the authorities, from whom he continued to claim more than £2,800 of Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit and Income Support.

John Frost, Head of Revenue and Benefit Services for the Council, stated: "Yet again we have a blatant case of an individual seeking to defraud the welfare benefit system, which is designed to provide assistance to the most needy within our community.

"These are inexcusable actions and the Council will not tolerate such behaviour. Failing to disclose information that is relevant to the receipt of welfare benefits is an offence and the Council will continue to prosecute those that have a total disregard for the law."
