Following the receipt of an anonymous statement via the Cambridge News alleging a rodent infestation associated with the new Subway restaurant on Hills Road, all of the retail premises in the area were inspected for such evidence.
Some evidence of activity was seen in the public areas, and the owners of the properties have been informed to make the necessary repairs and clear the litter that can attract rats.
An emergency prohibition notice has been served on Domino's Pizza at 27 Hills Road requiring them to close due to a rodent infestation affecting their premises.
The business will remain closed until we are satisfied that the infestation has been eradicated.
There was no evidence of any rodent activity associated with the Subway restaurant, which has only recently been fully inspected and awarded five stars - the maximum award possible under our Scores on the Doors campaign.
Councillor Clare Blair, executive councillor for community development and health stated: "We are very pleased that the newspaper brought this allegation to light and so enabled us to take the necessary action to ensure the health and safety of the public.
"It is essential that businesses take whatever steps are necessary to look after members of the public and also their own staff. Rats carry several diseases that can affect people, and their infestations must be controlled especially in food businesses.
"If anyone suspects a possible rat infestation, they should report the matter to the council via the customer service centre on 01223 457000".
