Cambridge City Council is proposing the creation of a new local nature reserve on part of Coldham's Common.
The site, which adjoins Coldham's Brook City Wildlife Site and Barnwell West Local Nature Reserve, already supports a diverse range of wildlife and is enjoyed by local residents.
This proposal will give a joined-up approach to the management of these natural green spaces. The main aim will be to reinstate grazing, which will benefit the scarce plant species such as Birds Foot Trefoil and Field Scabious.
Enhancements to the brook should benefit species such as water voles and kingfishers.
Ellis Selway, the council's Community Reserves Officer, explains: "This is one of 12 new local nature reserves that the city is looking to create over the next seven years, a key action of our Nature Conservation Strategy.
"The existing landscape character of the site will not change and some of the area will still be used for the folk festival campsite."
Council officers are holding public exhibitions and guided tours to explain the proposal at Abbey Meadows Primary School Community Wing on Galfrid Road.
The exhibitions take place from 2-4pm on Saturday 4 July and 7-9pm on Tuesday 7 July.
The public consultation period for these ideas will run until 31 July 2009.
