To celebrate national Compost Awareness Week, Cambridge City Council is digging deep to give away free soil conditioner that residents have helped to make by recycling.
Recycling officers will be at the Beehive Centre car park on Thursday from 10am-2pm, shovelling compost made from green bin waste into sacks for residents to take away – all you need to do is bring your own sack.
Recycling & Waste Minimisation Officer, Rebecca Weymouth, said "The idea is to raise awareness of composting as a great way to recycle food waste, cardboard and garden prunings. Recycled compost is also an environmentally-friendly alternative to using peat-based compost in your garden."
Cambridgeshire residents will also be able to order subsidised home compost bins at the event, and get advice from Master Composters about how to compost in their back garden.
"Even if you can’t compost at home, you can still recycle all your food, cardboard and garden waste in your green bin, and we’ll compost it for you" said Rebecca.
Over half of Cambridge’s food waste, which could have been composted, is still ending up in black bins and being sent to landfill where it adds to global warming through methane emissions.
