More new homes approved for the Cambridge southern fringe

News release from 13 June 2008

A planning application for nearly 350 homes and apartments (including 40% affordable housing) and 100-bed student living accommodation within Cambridge's southern fringe was granted outline planning approval on Wednesday 11 June 2008.

The Cambridge fringes joint development control committee granted outline permission for the development on land that is commonly known as the Bell School site, west of Babraham Road.

Negotiations will continue to complete the legal agreement that will secure the developers' financial contributions to the Addenbrooke's access road and the guided busway, as well as to community infrastructure to serve the development.

Meanwhile, the joint development control committee also agreed the final package of developer contributions and obligations for the Trumpington Meadows development, which was granted outline planning permission last February.

This will provide 1,200 homes (also with 40% affordable housing), a new primary school with community facilities, local shops and a new 60-hectare country park.

"The decision on the Bell School development represents another important part of the jigsaw of new homes around the southern edge of Cambridge," said Cambridge city councillor Alan Baker, chair of the joint development control committee for the Cambridge fringes.

"After outline planning permission last month for 2,300 new homes at Clay Farm and the confirmation of 1,200 homes at Trumpington Meadows, the southern fringe is really taking shape. These developments will help to bring about sustainable new communities with an emphasis on affordable housing, local facilities and good transport links."
