Two people pleaded guilty to benefit fraud at Cambridge Magistrates Court on 20 November 2008.
In separate cases, Mr Hassan Hamad, 28, of Franklin Court and Miss Linda Rudling, 30, of St Thomas' Square, both admitted offences against Cambridge City Council.
Mr Hamad admitted that he had received Housing and Council Tax Benefit with his wife Kelly Hamad, but had not told the council that both he and his wife were in paid employment.
This meant that he received more than £4,800 of taxpayers money that he was not entitled to. He was sentenced to a 12-month Conditional Discharge and was ordered to pay £250 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
Miss Rudling pleaded guilty to also failing to disclose her full circumstances, a fact that resulted in her taking more than £1,900 of public money that she was not entitled to. She was sentenced to an 18-month Conditional Discharge and was ordered to pay £435.37 in costs plus a £15 victim surcharge.
Mr John Frost, Head of Revenue and Benefit Services for Cambridge City Council, stated, "Benefit fraud is a crime that simply does not pay.
"In addition to repaying the money they took, these people have incurred additional costs and now have criminal records. This is something that Cambridge City Council takes very seriously.
"If you suspect anybody else is committing this crime you can report it confidentially and for free on 0800 328 0572."
