We could all do a bit more to help our environment, and when better to start than on UN World Environment Day? On Thursday 5th June, Cambridge Sustainable City is holding a free event on Christ’s Pieces from 11:00am to 8:00pm, with information stands from local and national environment groups including:
- The Wildlife Trust
- Streetcar – the pay as you go car club
- Energy Saving Trust
- RSPB
- Close the Door campaign
Pick up free low energy light bulbs and cotton shopping bags (while stocks last), and get advice and information from various City Council teams and departments:
- Sustainable City – applying for environment project grant funding
- Waste & Recycling team – reducing the amount of waste we create and recycling more
- Home Energy Officer – energy efficiency, saving money on fuel bills, grants
- Transport team – adult cycling, general cycling information
- Community Services – how the city’s green spaces are looked after
- City Services – City Rangers and Street Scene help to keep your city clean
Magnificent Revolution, Britain's first cycle-powered cinema, will be showing environmental short films and documentaries to school groups until 2:30pm. It is then open to the public for free until 8pm, so why not visit their 'baby top' tent and maybe have a go at powering it yourself?
Helen Witherington, Environment Publicity & Projects Officer for Cambridge City Council said, "We are really excited about this event. People can visit the cycle powered cinema, receive practical advice on ways to reduce their impact on the environment, and learn about the environmental work of the City Council – from waste collection to home insulation."
