Council funding schemes

Cambridge City Council awards funding to voluntary groups who want to run leisure, arts and sports activities for residents. More information can be found on our leisure funding page.

The council also award business rate relief to registered charities and registered community amateur sports clubs (CASCs). More information can be found on our rate relief for charities and non-profit organisations page.

Cambridge Future Champions programme

Cambridge Sport Network, supported by Cambridge City Council are launching the Cambridge Future Champions programme for gifted and talented able-bodied and disabled young athletes living in Cambridge who are competing at county or regional level and in need of grant aid.

The Future Champions programme is open to all athletes aged 11-25 to support their sporting talent with priority being given to Olympic and Paralympic sports.  Please note that previous applicants need to show significant progress in their chosen sport to reapply for a grant.

The Future Champions judging panel meet twice a year every January and July to consider applications.

Applicants must show:

  • evidence of residing in Cambridge city
  • evidence of county/regional performance
  • history of sporting achievements
  • national Governing Body testimonial
  • plans on how the grant award would be spent.

Elfrida Heath sports grant scheme

Promoting access to sport for young people who face barriers because of their financial circumstances.

Sponsored by Ms Elfrida Heath, administered and monitored by Cambridge City Council’s sports development service and community development grants team.

This sports grants programme is kindly sponsored by Ms Elfrida Heath who wants to help young city residents, who lack the funds, to pursue their own personal involvement in individual or team sport.

One-off grants of up to £250 are available to contribute towards the costs of equipment, specialist training, certain club fees, transport, competition charges or other necessary expenses.

Eligibility

Applications are invited from individual young people:

  • aged 10 to 18
  • of all abilities from beginners to advanced
  • living in Cambridge
  • able to show that they need financial help.

Applications are also invited from groups of young people:

  • who belong to a youth or sports club or group and who meet the above criteria.

Please note:

  • grants will not generally be made to cover all costs
  • grants will not be made for money already spent
  • you can only receive one grant in any 12 month period
  • if possible, your applications should be supported by either your school head of PE, senior tutor, employer, youth worker, sports club coach or sports club committee member
  • applications from young people with disabilities are particularly welcomed.

Living Sport and Sport England will explain how to apply for funding schemes they list and wherever possible help you with applications.

If you are an athlete aged 12 to 18 and require financial aid, SportAid Eastern may be able to help you. SportAid enables young athletes to compete in national squads and their awards, generally worth £500, help with costs such as travel, training, accommodation, competition fees and equipment.
