The Cambridge Disability Sport and Art Festival will take place on 9 September 2012, 10am—3pm, at Chesterton Sports Centre.
It is open to people of all ages with a disability as well as their carers and families.
Many local sports clubs and arts organisations will be on hand to offer taster sessions and provide information about local sports and arts opportunities.
At the 2011 festival, sporting sessions included athletics, badminton, boccia, cricket, football, tennis and trampolining. There was the opportunity for people to try their hand at martial arts and wheelchair basketball and a specially adapted climbing wall.
Creative arts activities included painting, crafts, circus, dance and drama workshops. There were a number of static displays offering information about cycling, sailing and keep fit and participants were treated to a dance exhibition from members of the British Wheelchair Dance Association. The whole event was accompanied by the sound of the Arco Iris Samba Band.
The mayor attended the event along with executive councillor for arts and recreation Councillor Rod Cantrill, Councillor Simon Kightley and Councillor Ian Manning. We were also pleased to welcome three young paralympians: swimmers Fran Williamson, Harriet Lee and athlete Jonnie Peacock.
Organised by the Arts and Recreation department, the festival was as part of the city council’s Olympics-inspired work around the Paralympic Games.
