Development of affordable housing
We are aiming to:
- increase in the supply of housing which is affordable to local people (569 affordable homes completed in the last couple of years - estimated target for 2011/12 of 233 affordable homes)
- develop sustainable new communities in major developments
- increase the overall supply of housing in the city - with a better mix of dwelling type
- make best use of planning policies which require developers to provide affordable housing when they build market housing
- develop a close partnership with other local authorities for planning and delivering new housing around the edge of Cambridge - including shared nominations to affordable housing on all strategic sites
- increase the housing choices available to people with disabilities - including an increased supply of wheelchair accessible housing and extra care housing

Increasing the supply of affordable housing
The role of the development, enabling and growth team is to promote the provision of new affordable housing schemes throughout the city.
Working with registered social landlords, private developers, local authority partners and other interested parties, we ensure that the affordable housing required within our planning policies and our housing strategy, are delivered.
We need at least 40% of all new built houses across the city, that attract section 106 contributions to be affordable homes.
This includes the southern fringe and north west growth areas.
We work closely with the planning department and other infrastructure service providers across the council to ensure new communities have all the necessary support to create attractive and sustainable new neighbourhoods.
The team members
- Sarah Lyons - development, enabling and growth manager (working jointly for both South Cambs District Council and Cambridge City Council on the key strategic growth sites)
- Sue Dellar – senior development officer
- Sabrina Walston - development officer
- Julian Adams – growth projects officer
Affordable housing programme
A three year rolling programme of sites is brought forward each year for consideration for development, redevelopment or disposal.
The annual review keeps the council appraised of progress with sites and offers the opportunity to introduce new sites for investigation.
