Garden competition

Annual gardening competition for individuals and groups who are council residents or leaseholders

Residents' garden competition

The residents’ garden competition is an annual event for all council tenants and leaseholders, and for community groups or schools on council estates. It’s funded by the council’s housing service.

The competition is very popular, with entries from all sorts of people and gardens. Both individual gardeners and gardening groups receive prizes across lots of different categories.

2012 competition

The competition is open to all council tenants and leaseholders. You may also enter as a group (eg for a communal garden).

This year’s categories are:

  • Kitchen Garden (vegetables, fruits or herbs)
  • Environmentally-Friendly Garden
  • Natural or Wildlife Garden
  • Communal Garden (eg a communal or community garden, or at sheltered accommodation)
  • New Garden (for those less than two years at their property)
  • Best-Established Garden
  • Baskets and Tubs
  • Children’s Garden (pots or plot)
  • Tallest Hollyhock

This year we have an Olympic theme, so have fun finding ways to give your entries an ‘Olympic’ flavour. Perhaps you’ll plant lots of ‘Runner’ beans, or the veg variety called ‘Iron-Man Broccoli’, or even ‘High Ball Onions’? Whether you grow the longest ‘javelin-shaped’ cucumbers or the biggest volleyball-shaped gourds, just have a go at impressing the judges by putting an Olympic twist to your gardening this summer!

The closing date for entries is Friday 29 June. Judging will take place during the week commencing Monday 23 July – we will contact you to arrange a date.

Please email your completed entry form [PDF] to yourhomeyoursay@cambridge.gov.uk, post it to Garden Competition, City Homes, 89 Cherry Hinton Road, Cambridge, CB1 7BS, or drop it in at any housing reception.
