Independent Living Service

Sheltered housing for people over retirement age who are able to live independently

Key in a lock

The Independent Living Service has four service areas:

Sheltered and Extra Care housing for people over retirement age who are able to live independently, but who seek a safe environment with support and care needs.

Supported Housing for people aged over 17 to under 60 with the ability and motivation to cope with daily living. Tenants are encouraged to maintain their independence whilst having the privacy of occupying their own home and are free to come and go as they please.

Community Alarms which installs an a button-push alarm in your home which, when pressed, contacts our control centre to notify us that you need help.

Involvement

Tenants in the Independent Living Service take a very active role in the resident involvement service. The tenants of our sheltered schemes have been involved in the planning and implementation of a £8.8m programme to modernise their sheltered schemes.

A tenant of the Independent Living Service, Terry Sweeney, is one of the elected tenants on the housing management board.

The citywide Sheltered Scheme Residents Association meets monthly to help keep service standards up and to keep sheltered tenants well informed.

Individual schemes have regular team meetings between staff and residents to organise a wide range of Active Ageing events for tenants of the Independent Living Service and the wider community.
