The housing management board

Are there improvements you'd like to see in your housing service? Do you think tenants should be given the power to make decisions on how the council manages your housing?

The housing management board (HMB) includes five council tenants and one leaseholder who help do just that - they make the big decisions on how to run the housing service and how to spend the available money.

Cambridge is one of the few councils in the country that has tenants involved in decision making at such a high level.

Elections in February 2008

Every few years, all the council's tenants and leaseholders get a chance to vote for their HMB representatives. During the most recent election in February 2008, six tenant and leaseholder representatives were elected onto the board. They are:

  • Tony Barnes (tenant)
  • Diane Best (leaseholder)
  • Beverly Dennis (tenant)
  • Brian Haywood (tenant)
  • John Marais (tenant)
  • Terry Sweeney (tenant)

What the housing management board does

The board monitors the work done by the council every three months, to ensure residents' money is being well spent and services are of a good standard.

It also decides on big improvement projects like the £8.8 million project to modernise the council's sheltered accommodation.

Decisions about what to do about tenants who get into debt with their rent are also made by the board.

You can also view all of the decisions made by the board online.

The housing sounding board

The sounding board now numbers over 1000 tenants and leaseholders who want to have their say on issues affecting Cambridge council housing.

Each resident on the housing sounding board has told us how they prefer to be consulted - whether by phone, post, email or coming to meetings.

Their views are used to improve services, and are passed up to the housing management board to help the elected tenants and leaseholder on the board put the tenants' voice at the heart of the decision-making process.

It'll just mean that a few times a year you may receive a message asking your opinion on some aspect of the our housing service.

Your views will then be used to influence policies and improve services. We don't share your details with anyone.

You could even win a cash prize, as all those who reply to a survey get entered into a free prize draw.
